Student Wellbeing is at the heart of the new Junior Cycle Curriculum. By 2020, every school will have to dedicate 400 hours to Wellbeing specific subjects over the three year period.  

The new National Curriculum Guidelines recognises that

‘Student Wellbeing is present when students realise their abilities, take care of their physical wellbeing, can cope with the stresses of life and have a sense of purpose and belonging to a wider community’.

The NCCA lists the six indicators of Wellbeing as

  1. Active
  2. Responsible
  3. Connected
  4. Resilient
  5. Respected
  6. Aware

Chrysalis Wellness aims to design programmes that are in alignment with the new Junior Cycle Wellbeing Guidelines. Each programme will provide a safe space for every student to be themselves, to be active, to learn tools to cope with the demands they encounter in their day to day life, and to reaffirm the importance of strong friendships and open, cooperative relationships with teachers and parents/caregivers.

Yoga postures help to make the body strong and flexible. The practice is suitable for every level of fitness.  

Breath work enables students to be more present and more self aware, noticing when situations make them feel uncomfortable.  When a person is more connected to the present situation, they begin to learn to pause and respond, not react. This increases the sense of responsibility for one's interactions with the external world.

Mindfulness practices bring awareness to thoughts and emotions and how they show up in the body. The exercises give students the power to self-regulate, enabling them to make better choices.

Group discussion reinforces the importance of respectful communication and provides a platform to discuss areas of concern for students, such as peer pressure, body image, bullying, exam stress and the negative impact of social media.
